Car Window Basics

The windows of your car are important parts of the structure of the car, as well as a vital safety feature of the car. It is important to learn basic knowledge about car windows so that you can find proficient and certified people to handle your car windows.

The car windows serve several functions. The windscreen prevents debris from flying into the driver and passengers. The windscreen forces airbags to deploy properly.  The windows help support the frame of the car and prevent the roof from caving in. The windows also keep the drivers and passenger’s limbs inside the vehicle especially during a collision.

There are two types of glass used in the windows of a car. The windscreen is made of laminated glass. Essentially laminated glass is two pieces of glass that have an adhesive plastic sheath between them that helps hold the pieces together. The plastic sheath prevents the glass from shattering when broken and keeps UV rays from penetrating into the car. The side windows and rear window of the car are made of tempered glass. Tempered glass is heated up and then quickly cooled to make it very strong and prevent it from shattering on impact. Instead it forms dull pebble like pieces that will not harm an individual.

It is important when looking for technicians to handle your car window needs, that they are certified professionals. The National Glass Association and the Auto Glass Replacement Safety Station Standard requires technicians to use urethane-based adhesives, as well as remove any old sealant and glass before replacing a window. Make sure the technician takes note of the details of your car especially the placement of airbags.

The car windows provide an important safety measure to your car. It is imperative that you have certified technicians working on your car. By educating yourself on the types of glass used in car windows and the methods by which they are created will insure that you do not pick the wrong technician and put your safety at risk.
